Account Executive

An Account Executive is a quota-carrying sales role responsible for managing the full sales cycle and closing new business with qualified prospects.

An Account Executive (AE) is a quota-carrying sales professional responsible for managing and closing new business. AEs own opportunities through the entire sales cycle, from the point of qualification to a signed contract. Unlike roles focused on generating initial interest, the AE's primary function is to convert qualified prospects into active, revenue-generating customers. This role is a cornerstone of most sales-led growth organizations.

Key Responsibilities

The AE's core responsibility is to guide a prospective customer through a complex buying journey. This process typically involves several key stages. After receiving a qualified lead from a Business Development Representative (BDR) or Sales Development Representative (SDR), the AE conducts in-depth discovery calls to diagnose the prospect's specific challenges and goals.

Following discovery, the AE presents tailored product demonstrations that connect the solution's capabilities to the prospect's needs. For complex products, they often collaborate with a Sales Engineer to handle technical validation and proof-of-concept stages. Finally, the AE manages commercial negotiations, prepares proposals, and navigates the procurement and legal processes to secure a final agreement. Throughout this cycle, AEs are responsible for accurately forecasting their sales pipeline.

The Account Executive role is often confused with other sales positions, but the distinctions are critical.

  • AE vs. BDR/SDR: AEs are "closers" who manage the full deal cycle. In contrast, BDRs and SDRs are "openers" who focus on top-of-funnel activities like prospecting, qualifying inbound interest, and booking initial meetings for the AE.

  • AE vs. Account Manager: An AE's focus is acquiring new logos or "hunting." Once a deal is closed, the customer is typically handed off to an Account Manager or Customer Success Manager. The Account Manager is responsible for "farming" the existing relationship, focusing on retention, adoption, and expansion revenue.
