The percentage of customers or recurring revenue a business loses over a specific period, typically calculated monthly or annually.
Churn rate is the percentage of customers or revenue a business loses over a specific period. Expressed as a percentage, it is a primary indicator of customer retention and a critical health metric for businesses with recurring revenue models. Companies typically track churn monthly or annually to understand how effectively they are retaining their customer base and its associated annual recurring revenue. A high churn rate can signal issues with product value, onboarding, or customer support.
Types of Churn
The two most common ways to measure churn are by customer count and by revenue.

Customer Churn, also known as logo churn, tracks the percentage of customers who cancel their subscriptions. It is calculated by dividing the number of lost customers by the total number of customers at the start of a period. This metric provides a clear view of customer volume.

Revenue Churn measures the percentage of recurring revenue lost from those same departing customers. It is often seen as more critical because it reflects the direct financial impact. Losing one large account has a much greater impact on revenue churn than losing ten small ones. This concept is the inverse of retention metrics like Net Revenue Retention, which also factor in revenue expansion.
Why Churn Rate is a Core Metric
Churn rate is a fundamental input for a company's financial model. It directly impacts the calculation of customer lifetime value (LTV); the higher the churn, the lower the LTV and the harder it is to justify customer acquisition costs.
A rising churn rate is also an early warning signal for problems with product-market fit or the customer experience, prompting investigation by customer success teams. Consistently high churn creates a "leaky bucket," forcing the business to rely heavily on new pipeline generation just to replace lost revenue.
