MEDDPICC

MEDDPICC is an 8-criteria sales qualification framework that extends MEDDIC with 'Paper Process' and 'Competition' to manage complex enterprise deals.

MEDDPICC is a framework for qualifying complex B2B sales opportunities. It is an extension of the popular MEDDIC framework, adding two criteria: Paper Process and Competition. By expanding the checklist from six to eight points, MEDDPICC provides a more rigorous structure for navigating high-value enterprise deals with long sales cycles and multiple stakeholders.

The 8 Criteria of MEDDPICC

The framework is an acronym where each letter represents a critical piece of information a sales team must uncover to accurately forecast and close a deal.

  • Metrics: The quantifiable gains the customer expects from the solution, such as revenue increase or cost savings.
  • Economic Buyer: The individual with the ultimate authority to approve the purchase and control the budget.
  • Decision Criteria: The formal requirements the buyer will use to compare and select a vendor.
  • Decision Process: The specific stages, people, and timeline involved in making a purchase decision.
  • Paper Process: The sequence of legal, procurement, and administrative steps required to sign a contract.
  • Identify Pain: The business problem or challenge that is creating a compelling reason to buy.
  • Champion: The influential person within the buyer's organization who advocates for the solution internally.
  • Competition: Any alternative the buyer is considering, including rival vendors, building an in-house solution, or taking no action.

When to Use MEDDPICC vs. MEDDIC

The choice between MEDDIC and MEDDPICC depends on the complexity of a sales organization's typical deal cycle.

The addition of Paper Process is crucial for sales teams that frequently see deals stall in the final stages due to unforeseen legal reviews, procurement hurdles, or security sign-offs. It forces reps to map out this administrative path early.

The explicit Competition criterion adds a strategic layer, compelling teams to analyze and counter competitive threats proactively. While MEDDIC implicitly covers competition, MEDDPICC formalizes this analysis, which is vital in crowded markets. A less common variant, MEDDPIC, includes the Paper Process but not Competition.
