AI agent
An AI agent is software that can autonomously perform multi-step tasks to achieve a goal by combining a language model with a set of tools.
An AI agent is a software program designed to perceive its environment, make decisions, and take actions to achieve a specific goal with minimal human guidance. Unlike a simple chatbot that only responds to prompts, an agent can perform a sequence of different tasks autonomously. It combines a large language model for reasoning with access to a set of tools, such as web browsers or APIs, allowing it to interact with external systems to complete its objective.
How AI Agents Work in Sales
In a sales context, an agent can execute complex workflows that traditionally require significant manual effort. A sales professional might give an agent a high-level goal, such as "Find ten potential buyers for our product at enterprise tech companies."
The agent then breaks this down into a series of steps:
- It could start by performing detailed account research using public data sources.
- Next, it might identify key contacts within the buying committee at those companies.
- It could then draft personalized outreach emails based on its findings.
- Finally, it can log all activities and new contacts in the company CRM.
This ability to chain different actions together is what defines its "agentic" behavior, making it a core component of agentic sales motions.
Key Characteristics of an AI Agent
An effective AI agent exhibits several key traits that distinguish it from simpler forms of automation.
- Autonomy: It can operate independently over long periods without requiring step-by-step human input for each action.
- Goal-Orientation: It is driven by a defined objective and can reason about the best sequence of actions to achieve it.
- Adaptability: The agent can adjust its approach based on new information. If one data source is unavailable, it can decide to try another, unlike rigid scripts which would fail.
Agents vs. Traditional Automation
AI agents represent a significant evolution from older automation technologies. Robotic Process Automation (RPA), for example, follows a strict, pre-programmed script to perform repetitive tasks and often breaks when a user interface changes. Chatbots are purely reactive and conversational. An AI agent, however, is proactive and can dynamically create and execute a plan to handle novel situations, making it a more flexible and powerful tool for complex processes like B2B prospecting.
