AI SDR

An AI SDR is a software agent designed to automate the tasks of a human Sales Development Representative, such as account research and outbound messaging.

An AI SDR (Sales Development Representative) is a type of AI agent designed to automate the top-of-funnel activities traditionally performed by a human SDR. It operates by combining a language model with specific sales tools and data sources to execute multi-step prospecting tasks. The primary goal of an AI SDR is to identify potential customers and initiate sales conversations at scale, freeing up human reps to focus on qualified opportunities.

Core Functions

An AI SDR automates various parts of the outbound sales workflow. While capabilities vary between platforms, common functions include:

  • Account Research: Analyzing firmographic, technographic, and intent data to identify companies that fit an Ideal Customer Profile.
  • Contact Discovery: Identifying relevant stakeholders within a target account and finding their contact information.
  • Message Drafting: Generating personalized email and social network message drafts based on account research and buyer personas.
  • Outreach Execution: Sending messages according to a pre-defined sales cadence and scheduling follow-ups.
  • Reply Triage: Categorizing inbound replies (e.g., interested, objection, out of office) and routing them to the appropriate human representative.

Role in the Sales Process

AI SDRs can be deployed in two main modes. In a fully autonomous setup, they manage the entire prospecting cycle for high-volume or transactional motions, often as part of a broader agentic sales framework. As a co-pilot, the AI SDR drafts messaging that a human reviews and approves before sending. The co-pilot mode combines automation scale with human nuance, especially for complex or strategic accounts where consultative discovery still matters.
