ICP fit score

An ICP fit score is a numerical rating that quantifies how closely a company matches an organization's Ideal Customer Profile (ICP).

An ICP fit score is a numerical rating that quantifies how closely a company matches an organization's Ideal Customer Profile (ICP). Expressed as a number, often on a scale of 0 to 100, the score provides a fast, objective way to assess an account's potential value before investing sales resources. It helps teams rank and filter their entire addressable market to focus on the best opportunities.

How an ICP fit score is calculated

The calculation begins with a well-defined Ideal Customer Profile, which lists the key attributes of a perfect-fit customer. These attributes can include firmographics (like company size, industry, and location), technographics (the technologies a company uses), and other signals (like hiring trends or funding events).

Each attribute is assigned a weight based on its importance in predicting success. For example, a specific industry might be highly weighted if it correlates strongly with high customer lifetime value. A model then scores each account against these weighted attributes to produce a single, composite fit score.

Why fit scores matter for RevOps

ICP fit scores are a cornerstone of efficient go-to-market execution. Sales and marketing teams use them to:

  • Prioritize outbound efforts: Sales reps can focus their time on accounts with the highest fit scores, increasing the probability of closing a deal.
  • Build effective account lists: Fit scores provide a data-driven method for creating a target account list or identifying high-quality lookalike accounts.
  • Route inbound leads: High-fit inbound leads can be fast-tracked to senior reps, while lower-fit leads might go to a nurturing queue or a different sales pod.
  • Refine market segmentation: Analyzing score distribution across the serviceable market can reveal new high-potential segments.

Fit score vs. intent and engagement scores

It is important to distinguish the ICP fit score from other common scoring models.

  • Fit score: Measures static, profile-based alignment. It answers the question: "Is this the right type of company for us?"
  • Intent score: Measures active buying signals and online behavior. It answers: "Is this company in the market for a solution right now?"
  • Engagement score: Measures past interactions with a brand (e.g., website visits, email clicks). It answers: "How interested is this company in us?"

While a high fit score is a strong foundation, combining it with high intent and engagement scores indicates a truly sales-ready opportunity.
