Email deliverability

Email deliverability measures the success rate of emails reaching a recipient's inbox rather than their spam folder or being blocked entirely by mail servers.

Email deliverability is the measurement of how successfully an email reaches the intended recipient's inbox. It is a critical performance indicator for any team that relies on cold email, as it determines whether a message has the chance to be seen at all. This metric goes beyond simply confirming an email was sent; it tracks whether it landed in the primary inbox, a secondary tab, the spam folder, or was blocked by the receiving server.

Key Factors Influencing Deliverability

Several technical and strategic factors combine to determine inbox placement. Poor performance in one area can negatively impact the others, making a holistic approach essential.

  • Sender Reputation: Internet Service Providers (ISPs) track the reputation of both the sending IP address and the sending domain. A history of high bounce rates, spam complaints, or being listed on blocklists will damage this reputation and reduce deliverability.
  • Domain Authentication: Protocols like SPF, DKIM, and DMARC act as a digital signature, verifying that the sender is legitimate and not a spoofer. Proper configuration is a foundational requirement for modern email servers.
  • List Quality: The health of a prospect list is paramount. High bounce rates from invalid addresses signal poor data hygiene to ISPs. Regularly cleaning and verifying lists is non-negotiable.
  • Content and Engagement: Emails with spammy keywords, misleading subject lines, or an excessive number of links can be flagged. Positive engagement signals, such as opens, clicks, and especially replies, improve sender reputation.

Why Deliverability Matters for Sales

For outbound sales teams, deliverability is the foundation of the entire pipeline. If emails do not reach the inbox, even the most compelling copy or valuable offer is useless. A drop in deliverability directly reduces the total addressable audience for any given sales cadence, hurting reply rates and ultimately pipeline generation. With major email providers continuously strengthening their filtering, actively managing deliverability has become a core operational task for any organization that relies on email to start conversations.
