Sales Director

A senior sales leader who manages a team of sales managers and is responsible for the performance of a specific region, segment, or product line.

A Sales Director is a second-line sales leader responsible for overseeing a significant portion of a company's sales organization. This role typically manages a team of first-line Sales Managers and is accountable for the revenue performance of a specific geographic territory, customer segment, or product division. Reporting to a VP of Sales or Chief Revenue Officer, the Sales Director bridges high-level strategy and frontline execution.

Key Responsibilities

The Sales Director's duties are focused on leading teams and executing the sales plan for their designated area. Key responsibilities include:

  • Team Leadership: Hiring, coaching, and developing Sales Managers. They are responsible for building leadership capabilities within their teams and ensuring consistent performance management.
  • Strategic Execution: Translating the company's overall go-to-market strategy into an operational plan. This involves territory design, quota allocation, and resource planning for their teams.
  • Forecasting and Reporting: Owning the sales forecast for their entire division. They analyze sales data, monitor pipeline health, and report on performance against targets to executive leadership.
  • Deal Escalation: Serving as an executive sponsor on large, complex deals. They provide support to Account Executives and managers to navigate negotiations and secure strategic wins.

Sales Director vs. VP of Sales

While the roles can overlap in smaller organizations, they are distinct in larger, scaled companies. A Sales Director's focus is primarily on the operational execution and revenue attainment for their specific segment or region within the current fiscal year.

In contrast, the VP of Sales has a broader, more strategic scope. The VP is responsible for the entire sales function's architecture, including designing compensation plans, long-term headcount strategy, selecting sales methodologies, and ensuring alignment with other departments like marketing and product. As a company grows, the VP delegates segment-level execution to Directors to maintain strategic focus.
