Chief Revenue Officer
The Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) is an executive who owns the entire revenue lifecycle, aligning sales, marketing, and customer success to drive predictable growth.
The Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) is a C-suite executive accountable for all processes and functions that generate revenue in an organization. This senior leader aligns the marketing, sales, and customer success departments under a single, unified strategy to ensure a seamless customer journey and predictable growth. The CRO typically reports directly to the CEO and is responsible for the company's revenue P&L.
Key responsibilities of a CRO
A CRO’s mandate is broad and strategic, focusing on the entire revenue engine rather than a single department. Key responsibilities include:
- Strategy: Designing and executing the company's go-to-market strategy, ensuring all teams are aligned on market segmentation and product positioning.
- Performance: Owning critical revenue metrics such as ARR, net revenue retention, and customer lifetime value.
- Operations: Building and overseeing the Revenue Operations function to create a single source of truth for data, analytics, processes, and technology across the revenue-generating teams.
- Alignment: Breaking down silos between departments by creating shared goals, common KPIs, and integrated processes that support the full customer lifecycle.
CRO vs. VP of Sales
The CRO role is distinct from that of a VP of Sales. While a VP of Sales focuses primarily on managing the sales team to hit new business and renewal targets, a CRO has a much wider scope.
The CRO oversees the entire customer journey, from initial demand generation activities led by marketing, to deal closure by the sales team, and finally to post-sale onboarding, adoption, and expansion managed by customer success. In organizations with a CRO, the VP of Sales, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), and Head of Customer Success often report to them. This structure centralizes accountability for all revenue-related activities and fosters cross-functional collaboration.
