The VP Sales typically reports to the CEO or, in larger organizations, to a Chief Revenue Officer (CRO).

The duties of a VP Sales are broad, covering strategy, execution, and team development.
- Strategy and Planning: They design and implement the sales component of the company's go-to-market strategy. This includes defining sales territories, setting quotas, establishing compensation plans, and forecasting revenue.
- Team Leadership: A core function is building and leading the sales organization. This involves hiring, training, and mentoring sales leaders like Sales Directors and Sales Managers, and fostering a high-performance culture.
- Execution and Performance: The VP Sales is ultimately responsible for hitting the company's sales numbers. They monitor KPIs like pipeline coverage and deal velocity, and ensure the team effectively uses its chosen sales methodology (MEDDIC, Challenger, etc.).
- Process and Operations: They partner closely with Revenue Operations to define and refine the sales process, select the technology stack (e.g., CRM), and ensure data hygiene for accurate reporting.
VP Sales vs. Chief Revenue Officer (CRO)
In organizations that have both roles, the VP Sales and CRO have distinct purviews. The VP Sales typically focuses on the execution and operational management of the new business sales engine. The CRO has a broader, more strategic mandate that covers the entire customer lifecycle, integrating sales with marketing, customer success, and partnerships to drive net revenue retention and overall growth. In this structure, the VP Sales is a direct report to the CRO.
