These agents handle repetitive, top-of-funnel tasks like identifying target accounts, researching contacts, and initiating personalized outreach sequences, freeing human reps to focus on relationship-building and closing.

How an AI BDR Works

An AI BDR operates as a component of an agentic sales model. A sales leader gives the agent a high-level directive (e.g. "build pipeline in this new market segment"), then the agent executes the workflow autonomously:

  • Research: performs automated account research to identify best-fit companies and contacts.
  • Signal detection: monitors for buying signals like relevant news or job postings to time outreach.
  • Outreach: drafts and sends personalized messages in a structured sales cadence.
  • Engagement: handles initial replies, answers basic questions, and books meetings on a human rep's calendar.

AI BDR vs. AI SDR

The terms are often used interchangeably, but the distinction follows the underlying sales roles. A BDR historically focuses on proactive outbound to cold accounts; an SDR handles inbound qualification. So an AI BDR is built for outbound motions, while an AI SDR is framed around incoming lead flow. In practice, most modern platforms combine both capabilities.
