Contact enrichment

Contact enrichment is the process of updating and augmenting a contact record with verified data like job titles, emails, and phone numbers from external sources.

Contact enrichment is the process of augmenting or correcting individual contact records within a CRM or sales automation platform using external data sources. The goal is to ensure that sales and marketing teams have the most accurate and complete information possible for a specific person. This includes details like verified email addresses, direct-dial phone numbers, current job title, seniority, departmental function, and location.

How contact enrichment works

The process typically involves matching a known identifier from a company's database, such as a name and company or an email address, against a large B2B data provider's repository. When a match is found, the provider's system returns fresh data points that can be used to fill in blank fields or overwrite outdated information in the local record.

This can be executed in two primary ways:

  • In bulk: An entire list of contacts or a CRM segment is exported, processed by a third-party data vendor, and then re-imported with the new information appended.
  • In real-time: An API integration automatically enriches new contacts as they are created in the CRM, or when a sales rep views a specific record.

Contact enrichment vs. account enrichment

While often performed together, these are two distinct processes.

  • Contact enrichment focuses on the individual. It adds data about a specific person, such as their email address or title, to enable direct communication.
  • Account enrichment focuses on the company. It adds firmographic and technographic data about the organization, such as its annual revenue, employee count, or tech stack, to qualify it against an Ideal Customer Profile.

Both are essential components of a data-driven go-to-market strategy, providing the person-level and company-level context needed to engage the right buyers at the right accounts.
